Below is an article from The New York Times that provides an example of a letter that a teacher wrote to Bill and Melinda Gates (see sidebar as well) asking them to use their (considerable) influence in the realm of public education. Our schools in Richmond need to make room at the table for the parents, students and teachers. For far too long, the parents, students and teachers in our schools have been marginalized and treated as if they are the problems, rather than integral parts of the solution.
Send your concerns, your suggestions and anything else you have to contribute to an honest and ongoing discussion of what needs to happen to make our schools successful for our entire community. I look forward to hearing from you.
To attract more middle class families to rps there needs to be a variety of excellent progrms offered, including arr and music, IB and AP, and world class athletic opportunities. Only when excitement over the programs is generated will families opt in instead of fleeing to private schools. Public relations. No more boo-hooing about all the things that are wrong.
