THE SHAME OF THE CITY OF RICHMOND
226 JAIL CELLS WORTH OF EXCESS DROPOUTs
Richmond’s Schools Wasted the Equivalent of 9.4 Busloads of Students in 2013
The estimable Carol Wolf asked me this morning how many school buses Richmond’s dropouts would fill. The 2013 total of 562 dropouts in grades 7-12 would fill 11.7 standard (48 passenger) buses. The excess of Richmond dropouts over the state average would fill 9.4 buses.
Note: VDOE won’t post the 2014 data until sometime next year.
She also asked about football teams, baseball teams, classrooms, and jail cells. Here are the results, all calculated by subtracting the 1.3%state dropout rate in grades 7-12 from Richmond’s 6.5%, and multiplying the resulting 5.2% excess by Richmond’s fall enrollment in those grades, 8,634.
Viewed otherwise, that 452 excess dropouts was 51% of the capacity of the old Richmond Jail and 44% of the rated capacity of the new jail.
(MANY THANKS TO JOHN BUTCHER FOR TAKING MY QUESTIONS SERIOUSLY THIS MORNING. REPOSTED FROM his CRANKYSBLOG ~ CW)
